El Área de Antropología Visual es un espacio académico y de investigación de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires que nace a través del Seminario Anual de Investigación, con orientación en Antropología Visual a cargo de Carmen Guarini y Marina Gutiérrez De Angelis. Desde su creación en la década de los años 90, se ha consolidado como un referente en el estudio interdisciplinario de la imagen, integrando enfoques de la antropología, la historia del arte, la estética experimental y las humanidades digitales. 

A lo largo del tiempo la necesidad de continuar reflexionando sobre la imagen nos ha llevado a indagar en nuevos terrenos y perspectivas interdisciplinarias. La  ausencia de estos enfoques en la carrera de Ciencias Antropológicas hace necesario incorporar la reflexión sobre la(s) teoría(s) de la imagen dentro de la formación, no sólo en referencia a la ineludible presencia de las imágenes y nuevos medios y soportes digitales en nuestra cultura, sino también ampliando la posibilidad de abordar investigaciones referidas a múltiples objetos, imágenes, soportes, medios y conductas ligados a una historia de las imágenes y una historia de los modos del mirar, que recupere el lugar y poder de las imágenes desde su misma condición antropológica.

El Área de Antropología Visual está conformada por un equipo de investigación que parte de los aportes de este marco teórico-metodológico interdisciplinario, aplicando las herramientas y enfoques de las Humanidades Digitales. Junto con la asociación Ondare Irekia (España) desarrolla proyectos de investigación, educación y divulgación en el campo del patrimonio cultural.

Carmen Guarini

Director

Graduated in Anthropological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires in 1980, she obtained in 1988 a Doctorate in Etudes Theatrales et Cinématographiques .Option: Cinéma Anthropologique from the University of Paris I- Sorbonne and Paris X-Nanterre (France) with a Thesis under the direction of Jean Rouch. He also obtained the Diploma d'Etudes Approfondies en Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle from the University of Paris V, Sorbonne in 1981 and in 1982 the Diploma d'Etudes Theatrales et Cinématographiques (Option: Cinéma Anthropologique) from Paris I, Sorbonne and Paris X, Nanterre. He attended specialisation seminars with Fernando Birri, Jean Louis Comolli and Jorge Prelorá

Since 1992 she has been a researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina. She teaches at the Master in Documentary Film at the Universidad del Cine, at the UNDAV (Universidad de Avellaneda), at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba and at the Master in Latin American and Caribbean Film FNCL/UA ISA - Universidad de Las Artes, Havana, Cuba. Visiting Professor in France, Ecuador, Spain. She currently directs the DocBuenosAires Festival. Since 2021 she is Vice-President of DAC (Argentinean Film Directors).

Marina Gutiérrez De Angelis

Director

PhD in Anthropology (UBA), MA in Art History (UNSAM), BA in Anthropological Sciences and BA in Communication Sciences (UBA). Since 1998 she has worked as a professor and researcher at the University of Buenos Aires, where she has taught, among other subjects, Immersive Visual Anthropology and Anthropology of the Image. She coordinates the Visual Anthropology Area and is a member of the Ondare Irekia - Patrimonio Abierto Association (Spain). Her research is oriented towards the study of images from an interdisciplinary perspective that articulates visual anthropology, cognitive neuroscience and digital technologies. She has investigated various aspects of visual culture, including the relationship between image and death, religious representations and devotional practices, colonial cartography, as well as contemporary manifestations of visuality in digital environments, with special attention to the intersections between technology, perception and the body. He is currently exploring the use of Virtual Reality, eye-tracking and AI for the study of prehistoric visual manifestations and the understanding of the processes of visual perception and attention. Areas of interest: Imaging and Cognitive Neuroscience, Anthropology of Imaging, Immersive Visual Anthropology, Virtual Reality, Virtual Reconstructions and Photogrammetry.

Greta Winckler

Researcher

Degree in Anthropological Sciences (UBA) and PhD in Anthropology (UBA). In 2017 she obtained the Higher Diploma in Education, Images and Media in Digital Culture from FLACSO (Argentina) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Childhood and Adolescence from the Universidad Nacional del Noroeste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (2020). Since 2014 she has been a member of the Visual Anthropology Area, where she works as a teacher and researcher. Since 2021 she has been an advisor to the Latin American Network of Digital Anthropology (Chile-Argentina). Her work projects address the relationship between political praxis and its visual manifestations, especially those linked to child participation and mobilisation in social organisations; the repertoires of national political iconographies in South America; and contemporary visual strategies of politics in the digital diaspora.

Paula Bruno Garcén

Researcher

Graduate and Professor of Arts from the University of Buenos Aires. She holds a Master's degree in Visual Arts Curatorship (Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero) and a scholarship in the Doctorate in Theory and History of the Arts (Universidad de Buenos Aires). She is a member of the History and Epistemology of Cartographies and Technical Images Group and of the Visual Anthropology Area (Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, University of Buenos Aires). She has taught courses and seminars on visual culture studies and contemporary art. Currently her main research interests are oriented towards the study of scientific visual culture from the contemporary arts and the optical spectacles of the 19th century in Buenos Aires.

Gorka López de Munain

Researcher

He holds a degree in History of Art from the UPV/EHU and a PhD in the same discipline from the University of Barcelona. He is a tutor lecturer at the UNED in the Vitoria-Gasteiz Associate Centre (degrees in Geography and History and History of Art) and is accredited by the ANECA as an Associate Lecturer. He teaches on the master's degree in ‘Artistic Heritage and Culture in Colonial South America’ at the University of Buenos Aires, where he has also given several seminars such as Anthropology of the Image and Anthropology of Visual Culture. He combines these professional and teaching duties with participation in various research projects within the framework of the Visual Anthropology Area of the University of Buenos Aires. He is director of the Ondare Irekia Association (Spain), dedicated to the research and dissemination of cultural heritage.

Carolina Griffero González

Researcher

She is an Image and Sound Designer (FADU, UBA), Lecturer in Higher Education (INSPT, UTN) and holds a Diploma in Design, Management and Evaluation of E-Learning and Virtual Training Projects (UNSAM). She is a UBA doctoral fellow in History and Theory of the Arts (UBA). She works as an ad honorem assistant in Image and Sound Design (FADU, UBA). Also, she accompanies teachers in the curricular development of their subjects, the production of digital resources and the critical use of technology at different educational levels (secondary, university and postgraduate). She is currently doing her TFI of the Specialization in Teaching Design with Technologies at the Higher Level (CITEP, UBA). She is interested in the crossings between education, design and social sciences. This has led to various community projects in which she participates as a producer of educational and cultural materials in various digital formats. Since 2022 she is a Master in Public History and Dissemination of History (UnQuilmes) and a student of the Diploma in Management and Preservation of Audiovisual Heritage (UNA).

Belma Hernández-Francés León

Researcher

She holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication and a Master's degree in Audiovisual Heritage from the Complutense University of Madrid, as well as a degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of La Laguna. She is currently working as an anthropologist carrying out work on the recovery of rural memory in the Canary Islands. Her field of research lies within the Anthropology of the image and visual studies, focusing mainly on research into the relationship between the archival image, memory and identity.

Carolina Menke

Researcher

She holds a degree in Anthropological Sciences (UBA). She teaches History of Visual Arts at the Faculty of Visual Arts. UNA, Universidad Nacional de las Artes and the Visual Anthropology Workshop at MDU, Master in University Teaching (UBA). Master in LAC, Combined Artistic Languages. Postgraduate UNA Visual Arts.
